What Is an RFE?
- An RFE is a formal letter from USCIS asking for missing, unclear, or additional documents.
- You must respond within the deadline listed — usually 30, 60, or 87 days.
✅ Getting an RFE does not mean your case is denied — it’s a second chance to provide proof.
Step-by-Step: How to Respond to an RFE
1. Read the RFE Carefully
- Identify exactly what USCIS is requesting.
- Pay attention to specific document types or explanations needed.
- Take note of the deadline.
2. Gather the Requested Evidence
- Only send what USCIS asks for — plus any logical supporting documents.
- Organize your evidence neatly.
- Include English translations if documents are in another language.
3. Prepare Your RFE Response Packet
Include in the following order:
- Original RFE notice (the full letter USCIS sent you)
- Cover letter briefly listing what you are submitting (optional but highly recommended)
- Requested documents (organized and labeled clearly)
✅ Tip: Use sticky notes or labeled dividers if submitting a large number of documents.
4. Send Your Response to the Correct Address
- The RFE letter will tell you where to send the response.
- If it’s a USCIS Lockbox, use the address exactly as written.
- Send via a traceable method like USPS Priority Mail, FedEx, or UPS.
✅ Keep proof of mailing (tracking number, delivery confirmation).
5. Watch for Case Updates
- After USCIS receives your RFE response, they will update your case status online.
- Processing times may vary — be patient but monitor your account.
