What Happens After You File
Step-by-step overview of what happens after you file your USCIS immigration application.
Last Updated: April 25, 2025
Step 1: USCIS Receives Your Application
- USCIS checks your package for basic completeness.
- If everything looks okay, they generate a receipt notice (Form I-797C).
✅ You’ll receive a physical receipt in the mail confirming they have your application.
Step 3: Initial Processing
USCIS may:
- Enter your case into their system
- Begin background/security checks
- Review your submitted documents
No action is needed from you during this stage — just monitor your case.
Step 4: Biometrics Appointment (For Most Cases)
If required, USCIS will:
- Send you an appointment notice for biometrics (fingerprinting).
- You must go to an Application Support Center (ASC) to provide fingerprints, photo, and signature.
✅ Bring your appointment notice and a valid photo ID.
Step 5: Case Review
A USCIS officer reviews your file:
- Checks your eligibility.
- Reviews evidence and supporting documents.
- May issue a Request for Evidence (RFE) if something is missing or unclear.
✅ If you receive an RFE, respond carefully and on time.
Step 6: Interview (For Many Cases)
You may be scheduled for an interview if needed:
- Adjustment of Status (Form I-485)
- Naturalization (Form N-400)
- Marriage-based applications
✅ Prepare for the interview by reviewing your submitted forms and evidence.
Step 7: Decision
USCIS will:
- Approve your case
- Deny your case
- Request additional steps (e.g., submit more evidence or attend a second interview)
✅ You’ll receive a decision notice by mail and possibly updates online.
