Naturalization Interview: What to Expect

What Happens at the Naturalization Interview?
Your interview typically includes three major parts:
1. Review of Your N-400 Application
- A USCIS officer will go through your Form N-400 line by line.
- Be prepared to update any changes (like a new address or trip abroad).
- You must answer truthfully under oath.
✅ Bring documents that support any changes since filing.
2. English Test
You’ll be tested on:
- Speaking: The officer will ask you simple questions to check your ability to speak English.
- Reading: You’ll be asked to read one sentence in English.
- Writing: You’ll be asked to write one simple English sentence.
✅ Common phrases include "The president lives in the White House" or "Citizens have the right to vote."
3. Civics Test
You’ll be asked up to 10 questions from the official list of 100 possible questions.
- You must answer at least 6 correctly to pass.
- Topics include U.S. history, government, rights, and responsibilities.

What Happens After the Interview?
You may:
- Be approved on the spot
- Be given a Request for Evidence (RFE) if more documents are needed
- Have your decision continued (delayed)
- Rarely, be denied
If approved, you’ll receive a notice for your Oath Ceremony to officially become a U.S. citizen!
